Usher in the new year with a new colour
Want to refresh some of the spaces in your home but don’t know where to start? Paint companies take the guesswork out of colour selection. Most paint companies are choosing a shade of green as their Colour of the Year (COTY) 2022. One broke ranks by selecting a red-pink.
Every year, paint companies and colour experts gaze into their crystal balls and select a shade they believe best represents the current period. Their choices are inspired by trends in pop culture, fashion, technology and design from around the world. I’ve rounded up some of their choices and wonder if any might inspire you to pick up a paintbrush to welcome in a new year.
HARMONY OF COLOURS
The star of Benjamin Moore’s 2022 colour palette is October Mist, a sage that’s comparable to the stem of a flower. The brand’s colour palette also includes shades like Hint of Violet, Pale Moon and Natural Linen. Last year, Benjamin Moore selected Aegean Teal, a blue-green that invited homeowners to reflect and reset. In 2019, it chose Metropolitan. Metropolitan is a stylish grey with cool undertones. In 2018, Benjamin Moore set its sights on Caliente, a charismatic and extroverted shade of red.
Behr Paint Company’s COTY 2022 is Breezeway, a silvery green shade with cool undertones – a colour that “welcomes a hopeful sense of renewal, restoration and healing.” Behr Paint’s 2020 COTY was Canyon Dusk, an earthy terracotta. Its 2019 COTY was Blueprint, a mid-tone blue that’s warmer than denim and softer than navy.
But back to the year ahead. Sherwin-Williams chose Evergreen Fog, a sophisticated grey-green. After years of cool neutrals and bold jewel tones, the colour ushers in nostalgic mid-tones. Want to add a little gleam? Incorporate a fusion of metals like champagne gold, warm brass and/or inky black.
CRAVING AUTHENTICITY, NATURE
The colour experts at Valspar by Sherwin-Williams, meanwhile, created a palette of colours that includes Blanched Thyme, a natural green. Valspar’s 2022 colour palette also includes:
- Delightful Moon is a warm yellow
- Lilac Lane from the purple family
- Mountain River, a deep and dark blue
- Subtle Peach, a simple pastel
- and Rustic Oak, a warm shade reminiscent of copper.
Glidden by PPG’s COTY is Guacamole, a spirited yet soothing green. After months of stay-at-home orders and spending lots of time online, Canadians are craving authenticity, nature and meaningful human interaction, Sico by PPG says. That inspired it to choose Cool Current, a sophisticated, grounded, versatile and highly-adaptable grey-green, as its COTY. Its colour palette also includes a rust, plum and greyish blue.
Olive Sprig is the star hue of Dulux by PPG’s 2022 palette, which features optimistic, colour-infused tones from every colour family, including high-tech greens and blues like Aloha and Lettuce Alone and warm hues like Paris Pink and Crushed Pineapple. BeautiTone’s COTY is Warm Hugs, a mid-tone shade of red-pink with an influence of orange.
CHOOSING THE PERFECT HUE
Designer tips for choosing the perfect paint colour include pulling a hue from an inspiration piece, such as a sofa, a bedspread or a piece of art. All paint colours are made up of other colours so it’s helpful to understand undertones. A warm paint colour will have a base colour – or undertone – of a warm colour like yellow or red, while a cool paint colour will have a cool undertone like blue, green or grey.
After narrowing down the possibilities, get sample-sized testers and paint them onto Bristol boards so you can move them around your space and see them in different lights at different times of the day. Finally, don’t forget to pick the right sheen because that will also impact how your colour looks.
While our feelings about colour are often very personal and may reflect our experiences and cultures, there’s no doubt it has the power to transform our spaces and express and influence our emotions. As you make your house a home, I hope you find the perfect palette that truly reflects you and your family.
