Summer, for me, is really busy and I find myself saving my vacation time for the winter months. So if my family and I want to take a day or two to enjoy this warm and whimsical season, I love the fact that I don’t have far to travel. Here’s my list of some of the fun and entertaining things Bowmanville and the other communities in the Municipality of Clarington have to offer.

A Country Path

Enjoy an authentic country experience with a relaxing drive along A Country Path | Enjoy a wander. It features stops like Rosemary Jenkins Pottery on Enniskillen Hill, where you’ll discover wheel-thrown stoneware pottery. In the Village of Enniskillen, all-natural handmade soap, bath, body and other items can be found at Timeless Essentials.

Tyrone Mills, built in 1846, is one of Canada’s oldest water-powered grist mills and boasts a woodworking shop, blacksmith shop and an outdoor wood-fired Quebec oven. Be sure to sample the delicious cider donuts made fresh on site! Also located in Enniskillen is 3Beez.Buzz. Pick up some liquid gold raw honey and beautiful beeswax candles.

Other stops along A Country Path include Archibald Orchards & Winery, Giessberger Farmhouse Cider, Gallery on the Farm, Knox Pumpkin Farm and Model A Acres B & B. Many of these stops are must-visit places each fall, too!

Water fun, farmers’ markets

Want to cool off? Cedar Park Resort in Bowmanville features slides, splash pads, pools and water playground fun for all ages, as well as miniature golf and picnic grounds. The Clarington Family Outdoor Adventure Park, located on the site of the former Bowmanville Zoo, offers a variety of activities.

Love farm-fresh goodies like apples, blueberries, certified organic beef, strawberries, squash and sweet corn? Clarington is home to numerous farms and markets (some of which are open seasonally), including Algoma Orchards and Gourmet Market, Allin’s Orchard and Country Market, Clarington Farmers’ Market, Gallery on the Farm, Knox’s Pumpkin Farm, Pingle’s Farmer’s Market, Stapleton Farms, Watson’s Farms and Wilmot Orchards. Visit Farm Fresh – Clarington to learn more and get ready to savour farm-to-fork deliciousness.

Summer BluesBERRY Festival

Speaking of blueberries, mark your calendars for the BluesBERRY Festival on Saturday, Aug. 12 in Downtown Bowmvanville. Treat yourselves to a blueberry pancake breakfast, fresh berry shortcake, pies, tarts and sweets. Stroll four downtown blocks while listening to live Blues bands and check out artisan and craft booths. There’s lots of family-friendly fun, including jumping castles, a rock climbing wall and a visit from Clarington Fire Services. Decorate your bikes, trikes, scooters and wagons for a chance to win great prizes in the Bike Parade – an event open to all ages. Don’t miss the Celebrity Pie Eating Contest benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Visit Clarington Tourism – Clarington and Durham Tourism – Good Natured – Good Times for other fun ways to enjoy summer close to home.
