Whether you are a resident of Clarington or just plan on visiting for a weekend, Clarington offers much to see and explore this summer. Oshawa, Bowmanville, Newcastle, and Orono are brimming with summer events, so forget those lazy summer days and get a little adventurous in the coming months. Here are a few of my top picks for what to do in Clarington this summer:
Newcastle Canada Day
Canada Day celebrations are the perfect way to kick off the summer season. On Friday, July 1st from 2 PM-10PM Newcastle will be hosting an exciting and entertaining Canada Day celebration. There will be lots of fun to be had with live music, delicious food, a beer tent, and numerous activities for children (including a petting zoo, swimming and jumping castle), not to mention a spectacular fireworks show. Admission and parking are free with a monetary donation.
Spartan Race Super
Have you ever dreamed about competing in a marathon? Well now is your chance, with the Spartan Race Super being hosted at the Brimacombe Ski Club on Sunday, July 3rd. This is a challenging race that will test your endurance and strength, with 25 obstacles spread over 8 miles of rugged terrain. There will also be a Junior Spartan event for children, with obstacle courses tailored to specific age groups. To learn more visit www.runguides.com.

Bluesberry
On Saturday, August 20th come to Historic Downtown Bowmanville to celebrate all things berry and blues related. Fresh berries and Blues music are the stars of this fun festival where you can indulge in fresh blueberry pancakes, as well as berry pies, sweets, and shortcakes while being entertained by live Blues bands. Also featured are artisan arts & crafts booths, a rock-climbing wall, jumping castle and a celebrity pie-eating contest. This event also boasts free admission and parking.
We Grow Food’s 3rd Annual Urban Farm Tour
This yearly event takes place on Sunday, August 21st from 10 AM to 4 PM, and offers you the opportunity to tour Oshawa’s most prized and bountiful vegetables gardens, and meet the urban farmers who tend to them. You will visit over two dozen vegetable gardens, and end the tour at Memorial Park in Downtown Oshawa, where there will be a Harvest Feast and live music. For more information visit wegrowfood.org.
Bacon, Beer & Cider Festival
If you are having trouble getting your man out of the house then this is the festival for you, because chances are they won’t be able to turn down the Bacon, Beer & Cider Festival. Enjoy the salty deliciousness of bacon paired with Ontario Craft Beers and Ciders, with proceeds going to the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation. For ticket information visit www.archibaldswinery.com.
